Corner View 7 Cityscapes

7

The theme for this week's Corner View is cityscapes. Oman's only real city, with a population of one million, is the capital, Muscat, so I've selected a few scenes from here. Muscat means 'anchorage' and it is actually a string of villages, forts, souks and mosques wedged into a narrow strip of land between the mountains and the sea. Some people say, it doesn't really have a city centre, but I would say the harbour area of Mutrah, featured in the photos, around which the city grew, is it's real centre. If you were expecting an ultra-modern city full of skyscrapers, like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Manama, you'd be in a for a big surprise. Sultan Qaboos likes to conserve traditional Omani architecture, and any modern development is very strictly controlled.

Continue Ian !!!

  2. Great cityscapes. When I come to this site I've left the comfort of my writing desk and traveled the world, with a click of a finger, though I know you've done all the work for us. Now, you give us more links, to more cities. Yeah! And Thanks.

  4. You'll think I'm mad, but the architecture reminds me a bit of Puerto Rico (not the turrets, of course)

  5. Everything looks so clean and white!
Unlike many big cities, it doesn't look like you could just pick it up and move it to another part of the world and it would blend in.

  10. Prodigal Tourist, no I don't think you're mad. In the 16th and 17th centuries Muscat was a Portuguese colony and there are still some buildings remaining from that time.

  14. yay to strictly controlling! i wish they would do that more here. i live in an old town, and it looks like somone just passed by in a hurry and tossed in some modern looking buildings here and there in between the old ones.

  15. I think it's great that modern development is controlled. I like the old architecture and it's great that Sultan wants to convserve the old. Beautiful.

  22. Very interesting. For me Oman is a total unknown, you could say we live in opposite parts of the world. It is so cold and wet here compared to your warm and stony cities and surroundings :)

  23. Fantastic photos --must be wild to live there.

  24. Ultra modern cities like Dubai, etc. rather turn me off big time. So nice to see that Oman is maintaining it's integrity. Thanks Ian for another peek into your world, and visiting mine. Take care...

  25. I love these pictures, the whiteness of the buildings, the architecture. Love that you have got to travel so much and write and still have plans to travel more. I'm from Guernsey originally, the most unusual country I've made it to is Albania - was actually strikingly beautiful in places...ah...to travel some more.
