A White Corner View

The theme of this week's Corner View is white. The first thing that sprung to mind when I thought about this was the Krzytov Kieslowski film Three Colors: White. But, obviously that's been done. So then I started thinking about the significance of white clothes in various parts of the world. In much of the Far East white signifies death and white clothes are worn at funerals whereas in America and Europe, where white signifies purity, it is worn at weddings. In most Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman, white is worn by men while women wear black. The last country I visited was Qatar so my main photo is from there. The second photo is of a Vietnamese girl in a white ao dai and the third was taken at a parade in Seoul.

Visit the other Corner View bloggers for their take on the colour white.

  1. Good shots !!! You'll see tomorrow we have some thoughts in common... Kieslowski was in my mind too, but... as you wrote, it's "déjà vu" and "too much" for a french (you know... bleu, blanc, rouge... are colors of my flag !) So... white as a symbol seemed important to me... too ;)

  3. they are all beautiful but the first one really is outstanding in its simplicity (and in how much it conveys.)

p.s. you don't have cv newcomers on your list either... sorry, attention-seeking? perhaps. ;)

  13. It's so interesting how the meaning of color changes over time. Wedding dresses for example should be black a hundred years ago in Sweden.

  21. Gosh - it really is a world tour with you! I love all the photos and it is so true about the meaning of colours across the world......and funny how here in the UK we rarely wear white (and those that do probably shouldn't!)

  27. such a great angle on white! actually right here in israel the season brings out a lot of white clothes. it's traditional to wear white clothes on religious holidays, and we just had rosh hashana and yom kippur, and the sukkot holidays are coming up. seeing all the white in the streets and at parties in the kindergartens etc also made me think of the different symbolic meaning and use of white in the world.

oh, and btw, you are so right: pomegrante juice certainly is the best :)

  31. What an amazing cultural insight into white clothes. In the desert they are mainly worn to protect against the harsh sun. Many thanks for these fantastic photos.
