The big modern building behind the Yateem mosque clock minaret is the Batelco Centre in Manama. Batelco is the main telecommunications company in Bahrain. The chairman of the company is, like the head of nearly every major company and government department in the country, from the ruling Al-Khalifa family.
I lived in Bahrain for one year and have visited it many times since, as it is one of the main communications hubs in the Middle East. I never expected it to be engulfed by the violent repression that we see there now. But, it is a country, like so many in the Middle East, where nearly all of the wealth and power are in the hands of just one family.
Sometimes "family" sounds not really good ;)

ReplyDeleteInteresting building - though I cringe seeing "the chicken man" right smack in the middle of it...
ReplyDeleteIt seems like right now we could all use a little bit better communication and a lot less fighting. It is so difficult to hear and watch all that is going on in the Middle East right now. I hope someday these countries find peace.
